Aldeyra Therapeutics - reproxalap: Nonproprietary Name Development

Close-up of an amber-colored human eye representing Aldeyra Therapeutics’ ocular innovation

Aldeyra Therapeutics sought support in developing the nonproprietary name for ADX-102, a small-molecule amine compound designed as an aldehyde sequestering agent. The therapy works by rapidly and irreversibly binding to aldehydes—molecules linked to toxicity and inflammation in ocular diseases. Because the compound, known internally as NS2, did not clearly fit within an existing USAN or INN stem, the project required:

  • Exploration of a new stem, subgroup, or subclass designation.
  • Creation of a nonproprietary name that accurately reflected the novel mechanism and future potential of this emerging therapeutic.

Brandsymbol partnered with SafeMark early in the process to gain a comprehensive regulatory perspective that would inform creative and strategic decisions. A global creative team, selected based on geographic and therapeutic expertise, collaborated to generate and refine naming options through three progressive rounds. Each stage narrowed the field to the strongest candidates, which were then subjected to rigorous linguistic and safety evaluations.

In partnership with Aldeyra, Brandsymbol developed the nonproprietary name reproxalap, which was officially published in November 2017. The successful naming not only established a clear scientific identity for ADX-102 but also elevated brand equity across Aldeyra’s growing therapeutic portfolio.
